Summary

The paper presents the results of an experimental campaign of characterization of the dynamic behavior of a water-to-water refrigeration/heat-pump unit under on/off operation. The tests have been carried out on the laboratory on a test rig especially developed to simulate the on/off operation of a unit due to a partial load applied to either the evaporator side or the condenser side. Previously, the heat pump was tested under steady state conditions for a range of water inlet temperatures covering the variation occurring during the actual operation of this kind of heat pumps when installed in a building. The instantaneous performance of the heat pump recorded during the dynamic tests have been analyzed and compared with the corresponding quasi-steady state performance, and a very good agreement has been found. A series of tests were carried out to quantify the degradation of the COP as a function of the load ratio. The different factors affecting the on/off performance are discussed and a simple formula for the Part Load Factor is presented. Finally, the results of the formula are presented and compared with the experimental results, leading to the conclusion that the only factor having a non-negligible influence on the COP degradation is the stand-by electrical consumption occurring during the Off period, which has an asymptotic growth at low load ratios. Therefore, it is concluded that the minimization of the stand-by consumption is a key point for the future improvement of the seasonal performance of this kind of waterto- water systems.
