Past, present and future working fluids for refrigeration and heat pumping cycles.

Author(s) : WATANABE K.

Summary

In this paper, the author gives an overview of the development of working fluids for heat pumps, or refrigerants in general for air-conditioning and refrigeration systems, over the past few decades in the light of various obstacles recognized in the past. There is no doubt, however, that global environmental issues such as stratospheric ozone depletion and global warming have impacted the air-conditioning and refrigeration industry worldwide like no other event in history. The discussion also covers the current state of the art in terms of selection of optimal refrigerants. New challenges are also presented.
