Summary

In this study, a household heat pump water heater (HPWH) test system was built and a coupling model containing both vapor-compression cycle and water heater was established to analysis the charging and discharging performance. Water temperature distribution, heat transfer coefficient and operating efficiency of the system were three main characteristics to compare the performance of HPWH with fixed/varied-diameter coil. The results of the coupling simulation showed good agreement with experimental results. In the water-charging process, heat transfer coefficient and COP of varied-diameter coil were 20.00% and 10.23% higher than that of fixed-diameter coil, respectively. In water-discharging process, difference of heat transfer coefficient and COP between these two coil designs was relatively small. However, the discharging efficiency and extraction efficiency of varied-diameter coil were 7.74% and 9.70% higher than that of fixed-diameter, respectively. Thus, this work could provide some guideline on optimization of condenser coil designs.
