Performance evaluation and design optimization of refrigerated display cabinets through fluid dynamic analysis.

Summary

Actual energy cost and the growing environmental requirements represent today strong drivers for commercial refrigeration equipment manufacturers to invest in research programs and to design more efficient products. Recent studies demonstrate that for an open refrigerated display cabinets the use phase is responsible for the 95% of the total environmental impact due to the high direct energy consumption contribution. Computational fluid dynamic technique plays a key role to achieve performance targets: the main advantages are the possibility to verify different solutions without prototyping activities and with good savings in term of costs for developments and tests. The results obtained show how the several technical solutions investigated affect the performance of the cabinets in terms of energy consumption and temperature prescriptions for displayed food, providing a significant environmental footprint reduction potential.
