Performance evaluation of an air-source heat pump using economised vapour injection compressor and flash tank coupled with capillary tubes.
Author(s) : NGUYEN M., HEWITT N., HUANG M. J.
Summary
Air-source heat pumps utilising an economised vapour injection (EVI) compressor have shown increased levels of performance over traditional heat pumps when operating at conditions comparable with the higher temperatures typically found in UK domestic heating systems. However, this performance is achieved at an increased capital cost with an additional heat exchanger and expansion valves required to fulfill the needs of the EVI cycle. The purpose of this work was to examine the performance of the EVI compressor in an air-source heat pump and compare that to the same compressor and heat pump system utilising a series of capillary tubes and flash tanks in place of the subcooling heat exchanger and thermostatic expansion valves traditionally found in an EVI heat pump. Results indicate that as expected the subcooling heat exchanger/thermostatic expansion valve has a superior performance across a wide operating range, but under certain conditions that are often found in the UK, the capillary tube/flash tank system also has acceptable performance.
