Performance of counter-current heat exchangers subjected to external heating.

Summary

A mathematical model was developed to study the performance of a counterflow heat exchanger when both fluid streams are exposed to external heating. It was found that under the external transfer condition, the effectiveness of the heat exchanger was drastically reduced. The model was used to predict the performance of the heat exchanger section of a micro-miniature Joule-Thomson cryocooler. In a condition in which the heat exchanger is inadequately isolated from the high temperature heat source, the Joule-Thomson device becomes totally ineffective.
