Summary
Pharmaceutical regulations governing the management of health products, from pharmaceutical manufacturers to retail pharmacies, via resellers and wholesale distributors, have evolved in Europe and in France over the past few years, particularly in the field of temperature-controlled products. Recommendations issued by the French Ordre des Pharmaciens (College of Pharmacists), Sections A, D and E, complete these regulations at retail pharmacy and transport levels. As in the case of all cold chains. the health product cold chain is particularly sensitive during the last mile. It is therefore useful to investigate the reality in the field of cold chain practices in retail pharmacies, from reception to dispensing. Following a study of patient behaviour performed at the beginning of 2016, the authors conducted a survey of a sample group of 639 retail pharmacists during the first half of 2016.
This survey investigated the key temperature management issues from reception of health products up until dispensing, including staff training, the cold chain quality system and relationships with suppliers. The results of the survey demonstrate that whilst most retail pharmacists conduct actions ensuring compliance with the cold chain, a lot remains to be achieved in order to guarantee a high-quality cold chain in general and effective temperature control in particular. right up until the medication is use.
