Summary of a four year study into Legionella ecology in cooling towers.
Author(s) : BROADBENT C. R., BENTHAM R. H.
Summary
Refers to a number of environmental and operational parameters related to Legionella colonization investigated in a long-term field study of 10,000 water samples from 84 systems in Adelaide and Melbourne, Australia. States water temperature, hours of operation and ambient temperature were the factors which showed strongest correlations with Legionella concentrations in the cooling towers. Sediments and biofilm were identified as primary sources of Legionella multiplication. The study found that routing cleaning of cooling towers should include a disinfectant that reaches distal sites in the system, and that commercially available field-tested biocides can effectively control Legionella.
