Pitfalls in experimental and analytical evaluation of zeotropic refrigerant alternatives.

Author(s) : LUNDQVIST P. G.

Summary

Refrigerant retrofit to environmentally benign refrigerants are often evaluated experimentally in laboratories or under field-like conditions. The analysis of these measurements may be handicapped by lack of relevant thermophysical property data due to composition changes for the refrigerant. The paper addresses this problem for a number of possible causes to composition changes. A thermodynamic model able to cope with the phenomena is used to estimate possible errors during analysis for entities such as UA-values and compressor efficiencies. Sampling of refrigerant for gas chromatography is an excellent complement to measurements of performance if a correct sample is taken. Sampling of liquid refrigerant should therefore be avoided in favour for gas sampling.
