Summary
This paper is to investigate the positive externalities of ice storage system on the basis of CO2 emission criteria. A methodology is presented to calculate CO2 emissions reduction of electricity sector resulting from the utilization of ice storage system. An ice storage system in a mixed-use complex that lies in the northwest of Beijing is fully analyzed. The results show that when ice storage system is used to provide the same cooling instead of conventional cooling system, the power grid could be improved and consequently CO2 emissions of electricity sector could be reduced. For North China power grid during cooling periods in year 2007, every time the load factor of power grid varies 1%, the variation of coal consumption of power supply is 4.524 g/kWh. CO2 emissions reduction per unit of storage capacity for the typical ice storage system is 0.520 kg/kWh. Finally, it’s suggested that CO2 emissions reduction could be used as an indicator assessing the positive externalities of ice storage system to electricity sector.
