Summary
The heat recovery unit between exhaust air and fresh air significantly reduces the power consumption of the air conditioning system. However, when the temperature difference between the fresh air and exhaust air reduces, the recovered heat reduces, but the energy consumption of fans remains constant, and the potential for direct cooling by fresh air decreases. This paper proposes a heat recovery unit with adjustable heat exchange area for fresh air handling, equipped with two stages of heat exchangers and corresponding air dampers. The heat recovery area is optimized by minimizing the total system energy consumption. The system's annual performance is numerically studied, and compared with a conventional system in an office building in Beijing as a case study. The results show that the energy-saving rate is 16.1% in Beijing compared with the heat recovery unit with an unchangeable heat recovery area, and the static investment payback period is 2.2 years.
