Summary

This paper proposes a usage of adsorption cooling system in cold chain transportation system, particularly for vehicles that are using diesel engine. The feasibility of using silica gel-water adsorption chiller in cold chain was carefully studied through mathematical modelling. An adsorption chiller that uses compact heat exchanger as its adsorber was proposed. The potential amount of waste heat recovery through adsorption chiller was predicted using energy balance method. The overall efficiency of diesel engine and chiller combination could be improved compared to the efficiency of diesel engine alone. Adsorption dynamic and equilibrium data of silica gel-water pair were obtained from the recently developed adsorption calorimeter. This data were used to model the performance of adsorption chiller at the lowest possible evaporator temperature, which is at 1°C. It is concluded that 1 mm diameter silica gel is a better option for cold chain application.
