POTENTIAL PROBLEMS WITH RECLAIM REFRIGERANTS.

Summary

THE AUTHORS POINT OUT THE FAILURES THAT COULD OCCUR IF A REFRIGERANT IS RE-USED WITHOUT EFFICIENT DECONTAMINATION AND CLEANING. THESE INCLUDE ACID FORMATION RESULTING IN WINDING FAILURES AND COPPER PLATING, NON-CONDENSIBLES WHICH WILL INCREASE SYSTEM PRESSURES AND POSSIBLY TEMPERATURES TO DANGEROUS LIMITS, AND OIL WHICH MAY STILL BE CONTAMINATED OR MAY BE INCOMPATIBLE WITH THE NEW SYSTEM OIL. THE PRINCIPLE OF RECLAIMING REFRIGERANTS IS ECOLOGICALLY SOUND AND NECESSARY, BUT IN PRACTICE GREATER CARE IS NEEDED TO ENSURE THE RECLAMATION IS SUCCESSFUL. D.W.H.
