Summary

Tools for predicting the energy consumption of supermarket refrigeration systems and their single components are increasingly used to assess different installation options. This is a report on the preliminary results of a comparison drawn between the heat extraction rate of a vertical open display cabinet actually measured at a supermarket and the corresponding values obtained by a model for simulating the cabinet’s operation. The supermarket’s refrigeration system is being monitored, recording the data obtained by an ad hoc measuring system and by all the controllers installed in the single components of the system. The values of 322 physical quantities will be recorded at one-minute intervals for a whole year. The model for simulating the cabinet was developed using the TRNSYS-16 because of the flexibility afforded by this software. Recordings obtained during the first 10 weeks of monitoring indicate that the model produces results fairly consistent with the values measured in the field.
