Prepackaged fruits and vegetables: a little-known but growing market.

Le préemballage des fruits et légumes frais : un marché peu connu mais en progression.

Type of article: Article

Summary

Prepackaged fresh fruits and vegetables occupy a very heterogeneous position in the retail segment, ranging from non-existent to omnipresent depending on the species, origin and distribution channel. Sécopid provides some data concerning five fruit species (peach, nectarine, pear, apple and grape) and two vegetable species (witloof chicory and tomato). Sécodip confirms the significance of the prepackaged option for certain categories. Over 90% of all retail sales of prepackaged produce are generated in super-hypermarket distribution. From 1996 to 2000, the market share of prepackaged produce grew fastest in hard-discount chains.
