Summary
Owing to the automation of dam concrete installation method, RCD (roller compacted dam concrete) method was applied by replacing the pipe cooling mechanism, which was mainly used previously. This means that the basic material precooling method has been revived. The author reported in an earlier publication that precooling is necessary for concrete used to build a very big bridge. The precooling procedure was adopted in the construction of the Akashi Straits Bridge, the world's longest bridge. Use of the latent heat of water, i.e. the evaporative cooling method, was introduced for the cooling of sand and rough frame materials. A brief description of sand precooling is also given.
