Summary

WHEN DAMS ARE BUILT IN WARM COUNTRIES SOME PRECAUTIONS HAVE TO BE TAKEN IN ORDER TO PREVENT OVERHEATING OF THE CONCRETE DURING SETTING. THE PAPER DESCRIBES TWO REFRIGERATION PLANTS MADE BY AN ITALIAN FIRM FOR THIS PURPOSE. AT THE KARAKAYA YARD, CHILLED WATER AT 278 K (5 DEG C) AND SCALE ICE ARE INTRODUCED INTO THE CEMENT MIXER: ICE PRODUCTION CAPACITY IS 460,000 KG A DAY FOR ABOUT A MAXIMUM DAILY PRODUCTION OF 7,000 M3 OF CONCRETE. AT SAN LORENZO, IN ADDITION TO CHILLED WATER AND ICE, INERT MATERIALS ARE COOLED BEFORE ENTERING THE CEMENT MIXER BY SPRAYING CHILLED WATER ON THE CONVEYOR BELT. THIS PLANT IS SMALLER THAN THE FORMER: ICE PRODUCTION IS ONLY6 A. E. F.
