Summary

DESIGN OF A CRYOSTAT, FABRICATED FOR INVESTIGATION OF ELECTRICAL AND GALVANOMETRIC PROPERTIES OF SODIDS AT CRYOGENIC TEMPERATURES. TEMPERATURES DOWN TO 0.9 K HAVE BEEN PRODUCED BY PUMPING THROUGH A SMALL ORIFICE OVER ANADIABATICALLY ISOLATED BATH OF HELIUM 4. ACHIEVEMENT OF LOWER TEMPERATURES HAS BEEN LIMITED BY THE SIZE OF THE ORIFICE. THE TEMPERATURES HAVE BEEN MEASURED BY A SUITABLE GERMANIUM AND A CARBON RESISTANCE THERMOMETER ON THE SAMPLE HOLDER INSIDE THE LIQUID HELIUM BATH AND BY MEASURING SATURATED VAPOUR PRESSURE OF LIQUID HELIUM 4 WITH MERCURY MANOMETER, OIL MANOMETER AND FINALLY WITH MCLEOD GAUGE.
