R22 substitution: experimental evaluation of HFC blends.

Remplacement du R22 : évaluation expérimentale de mélanges HFC.

Summary

Experimental research was done on 15- and 30-kilowatt liquid-chiller units equipped with air-cooled condensers and an air-air, split 6-kilowatt air-conditioning unit, using zeotropic blends (R407C) and near-zeotropic blends (R410A and R410B), which have been proposed as R22 substitutes. Drop-in tests show that the performances of R407C machines can almost be maintained (i.e., a maximum reduction of 5%) if the configuration of heat exchangers can be used for counterflows. If R410A/B is used, the machines must be completely modified, particularly in order to mitigate problems arising from working pressures as high as 35 megapascals. Lower R410A/B performances were observed at high ambient temperatures, a factor that can limit its application. However, the performances of this refrigerant are promising, with an energy efficiency at least as great as R22's.
