R744/R718 cascade refrigerating system for skating rinks.

Summary

A direct cooling system for skating rinks is presented. Instead of NH3, CO2 is used as refrigerant. The advantages include a reduced energy consumption compared with brine cooling, a higher volumetric refrigerating capacity (lower amount of refrigerant), and reduced costs for the pipe system. To avoid supercritical operation, the system was designed as an R744/R718 cascade. The R718 stage operates continuously under full load. This is achieved by using some of the refrigerating capacity for air-conditioning purposes.
