Summary

CYTOLOGICAL, STRUCTURE-FUNCTIONAL AND BIOCHEMICAL INDICES OF CELLS IN CULTURE WERE STUDIED AFTER DEEP HYPOTHERMIA: 277 K (4 DEG C). SHARP CONDENSATION OF NUCLEAR CHROMATIN WAS SHOWN TO OCCUR IN A RANGE OF 283 TO 277 K (10 TO 4 DEG C) FOLLOWED BY DECONDENSATION UPON RECONSTITUTION OF THE CELLS. MYTOTIC ACTIVITY, DNA AND PROTEIN SYNTHESIS WERE FOUND TO DECREASE ALONG WITH AN INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF ABNORMAL DIVISIONS.
