Summary

This article presents the experimental results of an original way to obtain in real-time the information on volume and mass flow rate of a gas after its phase change and providing cooling. Indeed, we have demonstrated the possibility to follow the main performance criteria of a refrigerating unit, like its cooling capacity and operating regime (full or partial load). In addition, for the open circuits like cryogenic systems, such method allows to track in real-time both gas consumption and autonomy.
Tests were performed with the propeller and the hotwire anemometers techniques by using dry-ice based refrigerating unit, with a superheated gas temperature and flow rate ranges of -9 to 10 °C and 0.2 to 4.0 m/s respectively. The results show that both anemometers closely track the CO2 consumption curve given by a weighing system. However, the device calibration is required before its use as energy performances tracker.
