Summary

A brief account is given of research carried out in Japan over the past decade on the postharvest physiology, storage and handling of commercially important fruits, vegetables and ornamental plants. Physiological studies reviewed include those relating to fruit ripening, senescence of vegetables and flowers, and ethylene biosynthesis. A summary is also given of work relating to the development of postharvest treatments and handling procedures aimed at maintaining the quality and extending the shelf life of horticultural commodities.
