Summary

A RECENT TREND IS TO APPLY HEAT PUMP SYSTEMS TO BUILDINGS. A TYPICAL EXAMPLE IS A HEAT PUMP THAT COOLS OR WARMS MULTIPLE ROOMS USING A R22 DIRECT EXPANSION SYSTEM WITH ONE COMPRESSOR AND ONE OUTDOOR UNIT. THIS HEAT PUMP SYSTEM WITH MULTI AIR CONDITIONERS IS TECHNICALLY DIFFICULT AND SOPHISTICATED BUT ASSURES HIGH ENERGY UTILIZATION. ADVANCES IN LIQUID FEED CONTROL BY THE USE OF ELECTRONIC EXPANSION VALVES AND PIPING TECHNIQUES HELP TO OVERCOME BARRIERS TO PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS. THIS REPORT DESCRIBES VALVE SIZING, FLOW CHARACTERISTICS AND CONTROL ALGORITHMS FOR THE ELECTRONIC EXPANSION VALVE. IT ALSO DESCRIBES EQUATIONS GENERATING THE AMOUNT OF PRESSURE LOSS FOR TWO-PHASE FLOW WHICH IS VERY IMPORTANT IN PIPING DESIGN.
