Summary

On 1 January 2003, the international reefer vessel fleet numbered 1309 ships with a total capacity of 353 million cubic feet, after being restructured over the past 5 years through sustained concentration processes. The important reefer ship pools like Seatrade, NYK-Star-Reefer and Lauritzen Cool have expanded, enabling them to improve capacity utilisation of the reefer vessels. Although the supply of reefer ships has fallen in terms of numbers and capacity, the optimised logistics of the bigger pools and higher capacity utilisation of the refrigerated container areas available on deck have partially compensated for this.
