Summary

The economic crisis has hit shipping badly in many respects. Especially the bulk and container sectors are suffering the most. Only the reefers are still sailing the seas safely it seems. Most of the contracts and time charters, which were concluded in the closing months of 2008 and during tense times for the other shipping sectors, still showed double digit increases of 10-15%. 16 new vessels are ordered for the year 2009 or later. In contrast, 41 vessels with more than 14 million cubicfeet were scrapped in 2008. So tonnage supply is becoming a favourable sector.
