Summary

The paper summarizes the requirements for a suitable replacement for R12, the criteria leading to the selection of R134a, the developmental efforts that have been made and the results of this process. Chemical properties, material compatibility and thermodynamic properties of R134a are described. Special requirements for suitable compressor lubricants and system cleanliness are mentioned. Finally, some explanations of installing closed product cycles for CFCs and their substitutes are given.
