Summary

During the recent Copenhagen conference a large number of decisions were taken, and many specific items will soon have to be investigated by the UNEP Technology and Economic Assessment Panel; much of them related to refrigeration. In the paper a review is given of the 1991 assessment, of the relevant decisions taken in Copenhagen, and of the future tasks for the assessment panels. In particular for the refrigeration area, the presentation will highlight some of the phenomena that play a role where it concerns the selection of refrigerants as long-term viable substitutes, and the possible consequences for applications in equipment. Infrastructure and economic considerations determine the short-term possibilities for servicing existing equipment.
