Summary

By 1990 the accumulated length of all of the refrigerated cabinets and display cases in Dutch retail shops was about 314 km, with a total energy consumption of 1730 megawatts/h per day. A study of the options to improve energy consumption by design changes was supported by actual measurements in supermarkets. Efforts are underway to devise a European energy labelling system for refrigerated cabinets, to give prospective buyers comparative information. Manufacturers and importers are invited to participate in the project so that any proposed labelling system will be accepted to all parties.
