Summary

This paper addresses the developments generated by the Montreal and Kyoto Protocols concerning refrigerant substitution and emissions reduction. As examples, the use of CO2 in supermarket and heat pump systems is considered. The question is to ascertain whether real sustainability for the future will be approached, because solving the atmospheric environmental problems caused by the refrigerants cannot be the only goal. Besides substitution of ozone depleting substances and reduction in emissions of greenhouse gases caused by refrigeration and heat pump systems, a comparison has to be done concerning the costs involved. The eco-efficiency has to be analysed in order to evaluate real progress in sustainability on the way to future refrigeration and heat pump systems.
