Summary

Climate change mitigation actions are gaining momentum every day, as the global community faces more climate related disasters and difficulties together with concerns regarding a future energy resource crisis. The refrigeration community has an important role in securing sustainability of the human society. This article presents sensitivity analysis of emission estimate taking key elements of emission, energy and resource impact of commercial refrigeration technologies, including systems that use carbon dioxide (CO2) as refrigerant and techniques of cooling load reduction such as doors on open display cabinets. Results suggest that reduction of the leak rate, cooling load, energy consumption and consideration of low resources are all complementary and not interchangeable in taking a long term sustainable approach. Immediate actions can potentially reduce emission impacts by an average of 62% and energy and corresponding energy resource use by up to 40%, when applied in new or existing R404A systems.
