Summary

This report was prepared as an account of work sponsored by ARTI under its "HVAC&R Research for the 21st Century Program". The purpose of this study was to investigate the refrigerant behaviour (flow pattern, heat transfer coefficient, pressure drop) in flattened copper tubes. Flattened tubes are an interesting alternative to round tubes as they greatly reduce the refrigerant charge in direct-expansion evaporators and provide for a more compact heat exchanger design. Flattened tubes in the present case refer to plain round tubes that have been rolled (or extruded) flat on top and bottom and remain round at the two ends. Six different tube configurations were investigated using refrigerants R22 and R410A. Extract from the table of contents: fundamental definitions; existing methods (two-phase pressure drops; flow boiling heat transfer); description of experimental test facility; experimental results and new prediction methods.
