Summary

Fouling of heat exchangers is one of the major degradation mechanisms of refrigeration units performance: it is therefore essential to know the causes and to limit the effects. In this context, after a brief description of the main impacts of the different type of fouling of the refrigeration unit exchangers (evaporator as condenser), we observe that the usual practices of design and maintenance, but also predictive modelization of fouling of the exchangers, to take into account the future deterioration of the performance of the exchangers are not very precise, rarely adapted to real operating conditions and also generate additional cost on design and operating. In order to provide elements of response to the designers and plant operators, an instrumented test bench has been put in place to recreate several different fouling situations and to obtain experimental data. These date are analyzed and used to create and compare different methods of modelization and prediction of fouling. As such, an asymptotic foulind model and several predictive models from a statistical approach by different methods (Multiple Linear Registration, Artificial Neural Network) are compared. For each of them, conclusions are made about the accuracy of the modes and their application limits.
