Summary

The refrigeration sector has to address 2 major environmental challenges: protection of stratospheric ozone (the ozone layer) and mitigation of global warming. The international community has adopted two international treaties dealing with these issues: the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer in 1985 and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 1992. These conventions gave rise to 2 international regulatory protocols: the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer that was signed in 1987 and entered into force on January 1, 1989 then was modified by a series of amendments made necessary by expanding scientific knowledge in this field and the Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (signed in 1997).
