Replacing fluorocarbons with hydrocarbon mixtures in centrifugal water chillers.
Author(s) : TADROS A., CLARK J. W., MACLAINE-CROSS I. L., et al.
Summary
Environmental impacts and legislation require centrifugal water chillers cease using fluorocarbon refrigerants. For fluorocarbon refrigerants R-123, R-11, R-245ca, R-134a and R-12 with spray and flooded evaporators, we calculated mixture compositions, rotor speeds and coefficients of performance for hydrocarbon replacements. For example replacing HCFC-123 in a flooded evaporator with pentane/hexane [90.1/9.9] and increasing the rotor speed by 43% will increase the coefficient of performance by 4.9% at the same cooling capacity.
