Summary

BOILING HEAT TRANSFER EXPERIMENTS WERE CARRIED OUT AT ATMOSPHERIC AND REDUCED PRESSURE CONDITIONS FOR SINGLE HORIZONTAL HEATING TUBE HAVING A NARROW ANNULAR GAP AROUND IT. LIQUIDS WERE DISTILLED WATER AND A 55% LITHIUM BROMIDE AQUEOUS SOLUTION. IN THE CASE OF DISTILLED WATER, HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT OF THE 2.5 MM GAP WAS INCREASED TO ABOUT 3 TIMES THAT OF POOL BOILING AT 4,000 PASCAL ABS PRESSURE. MINIMUM HEAT FLUX OF INCIPIENT BOILING WAS REDUCED TO THE ORDER OF SOME OF HUNDREDS OF POOL BOILING. EFFECT OF VARIATION OF GAP TO THE HEAT TRANSFER WAS RELATIVELY SENSITIVE HAVING AN OPTIMUM GAP AT EACH WORKING PRESSURE FOR WATER, BUT THE EFFECT WAS NOT SO SIGNIFICANT FOR THE LITHIUM BROMIDE SOLUTION.
