DESIGN AND OPERATING PARAMETERS WHICH AFFECT ELECTRICITY CONSU MPTION IN DOMESTIC, SMALL RETAIL AND SUPERMARKET SYSTEMS ARE DISCUSSED. IN GENERAL, SAVINGS OF 15 TO 20% ARE POSSIBLE ON EXISTING PLANTS AND OVER 30% ON NEW PLANTS, MAINLY BY CORRECT CHOICE OF COMPRESSOR, CONDENSER AND EVAPORATOR SURFACE AREAS. IN THE SUPERMARKET SECTOR, CHOICE OF COMPRESSOR SIZE IS PARAMOUNT TO AVOID INEFFICIENT PART LOAD OPERATION, AND ALSO TO USE FLOATING HEAT PRESSURES. REGULAR PLANT MONITORING IS ADVISED TOGETHERWITH THE USE OF COMPUTER BASED DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS. G.R.S.
