Summary

Advancing healthcare facilities is becoming crucial due to increasing well-being issues and rising challenges from newly discovered viruses. Massive deployment of heaters and chillers is necessary to meet the required thermal load demand in hospitals. This study proposes a retrofitting potential of an R744 heat pump/chiller for a multispecialty hospital in India as a replacement to the existing diesel-fired boiler and centralized cooling system (R134a). Moreover, an approach to investigate predictive maintenance is discussed. The proposed system verifies extreme temperature conditions to identify the optimum operational condition, eventually reducing the direct and maintenance costs associated. Operational data from a multispecialty hospital is used to ensure the applicability of the R744 heat pump/chiller unit. It is observed that the proposed unit has the potential to reduce operational costs and carbon footprints by approximately 74% and 70%, respectively. Also, with predictive maintenance, the unit will stay in operation for a longer period.
