Summary

The flow behavior of hexadecane-in-water emulsions stabilized by cellulose nanocrystals was investigated using a capillary viscometer. This work is motivated by the need for energy-efficient and environmentally friendly secondary refrigeration systems, where phase change material slurries can serve as advanced heat transfer fluids. Emulsions were prepared with hexadecane volume fractions ranging from 0 to 15%, and measurements were conducted across temperatures below and above 18 °C to explore both solid (dispersions) and liquid (emulsions) states of hexadecane droplets. Anionic surfactant AOT (0–1 vol%) was added to prevent agglomeration and ensure continuous flow. The apparent viscosity was determined from pressure drop measurements and analyzed using Rabinowitsch–Mooney corrections. Results showed that viscosity increased
with hexadecane content, regardless of its phase. Interestingly, repeated cycling of the emulsions in the loop caused a reduction in viscosity, which correlated with a decrease in droplet size, as confirmed by granulometry. These findings suggest that mechanical shear induced by the gear pump modifies droplet morphology. The presence of AOT proved essential to maintain flowability and prevent droplet aggregation during cooling.
