Risk analysis of flammable refrigerants. 3. A simplified method for estimating the risk.

Author(s) : COLBOURNE D., SUEN K. O.

Summary

A detailed methodology for quantitative risk assessment (QRA) of flammable refrigerants in refrigeration and air conditioning systems has been presented previously (e.g., Colbourne and Suen, 2004a, 2008a). However, evaluating the risk with these QRA models requires considerable time. In order to make this QRA more accessible, and to enable a quicker assessment, it was deemed appropriate to develop a simplified method based on basic correlations. To this end, the results generated from the dispersion, probability and consequence models were employed to identify the general relationship between risk and key input parameters, such as refrigerant charge and airflow characteristics. First, the dependence of flammable quantities was correlated to the empirically determined maximum room floor concentration of the released refrigerant. This formulation was then adapted to determine ignition frequency and subsequently consequence. See also this Bulletin, references 2009-0525 and 0526.
