Summary

The paper discusses the problems involved in assessing the risks from the use of toxic, explosive or combustible refrigerants. Various scenarios are examined, including leaks, boiling liquid producing large quantities of vapour, breaks in tanks or piping, etc., with an assessment of the possible effects on people and property. Methods for calculating hazards are given with the different scenarios. Applications to hydrocarbon and ammonia refrigerants are examined.
