Summary

Factors affecting the incidence of scald in stored apples, including time of harvest, fruit vitamin content and storage conditions, are discussed, with data from several trials on cv. Jonagold. The use of ultra-low-oxygen storage reduced the incidence of the disorder, the best results being obtained in 1.3% O2 and 5% CO2. Its incidence was greater in apples harvested too early and in fruits with a low vitamin E content at harvest and a low vitamin C content after a 3-month storage.
