THE COMPRESSORS OF HEAT PUMP APPLICATIONS ARE EXPOSED TO INCREASED MECHANICAL AND THERMAL STRESS AND IN SPITE OF THAT THE ECONOMY OF HEAT PUMP APPLICATION LARGELY DEPENDS ON THE OPERATING RELIABILITY AND ON EXTENDED LIFE EXPECTATION OF COMPRESSORS. THAT IS WHY RECIPROCATING COMPRESSORS UNDERGO PERFECTIONING WITH AN ENORMOUS EFFORT OF DESIGNERS AND NEW COMPRESSOR DESIGN CONCEPTS ARE BEING LOOKED FOR. ONE OF PROMISING WAYS IS THE ROLLING PISTON COMPRESSOR. TWO BASIC DESIGN CONCEPTS OF A EUROPEAN AND OF TWO AMERICAN MANUFACTURERS ARE COMPARED AND BASIC MERITS OF ROLLING PISTON COMPRESSORS -POWER SAVINGS, MATERIAL SAVINGS, SMALLER DIMENSIONS, SMALLER NUMBER OF MOVING PARTS, SIMPLE REGULATION MEANS ETC ARE NAMED.
