IIR document

Safety aspects of air cycle refrigeration and heat-pump systems.

Summary

The paper evaluates the potential for hazard from component-pipework failure due to pressure, failure of high speed rotating machinery (turbine compressors and expanders), noise from high speed rotary components, and contamination in open systems. Where relevant national Regulations implement European Directives in these areas, the legislative requirements are outlined and applied to air cycle systems. The paper concludes that the use of air as a working fluid presents no extraordinary safety hazards.
