Summary

Italian standards on safety in refrigerating plants: i) ISPESI standards regarding construction and operation of high-pressure equipment; ii) UNI 9011 concerning security of refrigerating plants, especially machine room safety measures in the case of ammonia; iii) various standards concerning risk of explosion; iv) R.D. 09.01.1927. Special regulations for use of toxic gases: toxic effect on human health, authorization for use, particular rules for accident prevention (safety showers and fountains, protection devices, safety rules). The author considers ammonia as one of the best replacements for CFCs if the relevant safety conditions are fulfilled.
