Summary
What might a sustainable economic structure for the Netherlands in the year 2030 look like? The article presents the DEOS (sustainable economic development scenarios) model to answer this question. The model identifies environmental themes and economic sectors that are critical to the economic development of the Netherlands. In three of the four scenarios the target set for greenhouse gas emission reductions are critical to further economic growth. It appears that both strong environmental technological progress and substantial sectoral changes are necessary if economic growth and environmental quality are to be compatible. However, some trade-off between the two policy goals remains.
