Summary

The paper aims at summarizing the history of ammonia used as a refrigerant. Following Boyle's experiments with his vacuum pump, foreshadowing some phases of modern refrigerating cycles, Cullen assessed in Scotland that evaporating some fluids produces refrigeration. The list of refrigerants, set up by Cullen in 1755, comprises ammonia first, the produce of reaction of burnt lime and ammonium chloride. The manufacture of the earliesst ammonia compressors started from 1800 (Perkins), then around 1875 (Linde).
