Summary

AN INSTALLATION IS DESCRIBED IN WHICH SCREW COMPRESSORS HAVE BEEN USED SUCCESSFULLY FOR SUPERMARKET REFRIGERATION. TWO COMBINED REFRIGERATION PACKS WERE USED, EACH CONSISTING OF 3 COMPRESSORS WITH OPEN DRIVE 2-SPEED MOTORS, ONE PACK OPERATING ON R12 FOR ABOVE 273 K (0 DEG C) COOLING, THE OTHER ON R22 FOR LOW TEMPERATURE WORK. EACH PACK HAD A COMMON DISCHARGE OIL SEPARATOR, AIR COOLED OIL COOLER, AND OIL INJECTION TO EACH COMPRESSOR. AIR COOLED CONDENSERS WERE USED, REJECTING HEAT TO AN UNDERGROUND CAR PARK IN COOL WEATHER. OPERATION HAS PROVED SATISFACTORY, WITH SAVINGS DUE TO LOWER MAINTENANCE AND RUNNING COSTS, AND THE LOWER PRICE OFR22 COMPARED WITH THE USUAL R502 FOR PISTON COMPRESSORS. THE AUTHOR SUGGESTS R22 COULD BE USED THROUGHOUT AND A TWO-STAG SST OLDSHEN D. W. H.
