Scroll compressors for CO2 in cascade systems.

Author(s) : WINANDY E., HUNDY G.

Summary

This paper presents the scroll compressor as favourable technology for cascade systems using CO2 at low temperature in supermarket applications. The typical operating conditions of CO2 cascade systems are first reviewed. Air conditioning scroll compressors, specially developed for high-pressure refrigerant R410A, are shown to match very well CO2 cascade conditions in terms of pressure range, pressure ratio, temperatures and motor power. An overall comparison between reciprocating and scroll compressors is finally given. From the performance standpoint, it highlights the clear benefit of the scroll technology particularly in this application where the pressure ratio is close to the internal built-in optimum. From the reliability point of view, scroll technology superiority is made clear: better liquid handling arising from axial and radial compliance, no reed valves, less moving parts, less vibration and a hermetic design which is fundamental in this application.
