Summary

Variable speed compressor technology brings to the HVAC industry new levels of efficiency, comfort, reliability and versatility. Variable speed systems work by connecting a motor control drive to the compressor: Recip, Scroll or Centrifugal. For Scroll technology in particular, Danfoss Commercial Compressors is continuing with detailed studies of the wrap stresses. Understanding the mechanical behavior of compressor wraps (as the compressor runs) is one of the most important considerations when designing the compressor to guarantee its reliability. Wraps are stressed by both the compression forces and the inertia forces due to parts motion. Since the speed of rotation for our Scroll compressors could go up to 100 RPS, this study permits us to know if we have to include the wraps stress due to the inertia forces in our analyses.
